What is black ice?
It’s a thin layer of ice on the road that can be almost invisible.
When is black ice most likely to occur?
If the air temperature is warmer than the pavement, moisture can rapidly freeze and create a thin, transparent layer of ice.
What should you do?
- According to the National Safety Council, you should keep at least a five second following distance from the vehicle in front of you since it takes twice as long to stop on black ice.
- Be especially vigilant in the early morning when the air temperature rises faster than the pavement temperature.
- Never brake on ice because it can cause a vehicle to skid.
- Be careful when driving on bridges and overpasses and in tunnels.
