Illinois law requires drivers to turn on headlights when operating windshield wipers, even when it’s daylight. So, if there’s rain or snow, make sure you turn your headlights are on. This makes your vehicle more visible to other drivers, reducing the chance of accidents.
When you’re driving in rain, keep these precautions from the 2016 Illinois Rules of the Road in mind:
- Turn off the cruise control if in use and increase your following distance.
- Take special precautions on curves and turns and while braking.
- Avoid hydroplaning by slowing down. If you skid while hydroplaning, try to regain control of the vehicle. Otherwise, release the accelerator and ride out the skid.
- If you come across a roadway or viaduct that has been flooded due to heavy rain, do not drive through the flooded area. Turn your vehicle around and find another route.
