Safety share: Good thinking and GFCI outlet prevent electrical shock

Have you ever noticed that some electrical outlets have reset buttons on them, different than regular outlets? Ever wonder why? They’re specially designed for our safety.

In this safety share submitted by Joe Kilar (ESQ), Joe recalls how an electrical outlet kept tripping each time he plugged his electric lawn mower in. What do you think? Just an annoyance, or a sign of trouble?

Find out what happened and why. Then share this information with your colleagues and/or staff.

Kicking off meetings with a safety share is a great way to break the ice, begin teambuilding from the onset of meetings and keep safety at the forefront of our minds each and every day. The Safety Share Library, binned by topic area, provides a variety of resources for your convenience.

All employees, groups and divisions are encouraged to submit safety shares for inclusion in the library. Submission details are available on Inside Argonne.

Each month a safety share submitted by an individual will be selected by Environment, Safety and Quality Assurance to receive a Spot Award for demonstrated safety leadership. The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).
