If you’re a homeowner, there’s a chance you may need to use an extension ladder at some point. Here are some tips on how to safely set up and use an extension ladder.

How to set up an extension ladder:

  1. Assess the area and make sure no live electrical wires can come in contact with the ladder. Metal conducts electricity, so this step is essential.
  2. Next, when placing the ladder, ensure that it is not in front of a door that opens towards the ladder.
  3. Set the ladder on firm ground. Do not allow it to lean sideways. Also, do not use it on ice, snow or any other slippery surface without a non-skid device or securing feet. Do not stack the ladder on unstable baes or scaffolds to gain additional height.
  4. Set the ladder at a proper 75.5 degree angle by bracing the ladder base a distance of one quarter total working length of the ladder away from base of the vertical support. Note: under no circumstances should the ladder be less than three feet from the vertical support.
  5. While raising the extension, secure the base of the ladder to ensure it doesn’t slip. Note: never set up a ladder while it is extended.
  6. Erect the ladder with a minimum of three feet extending above the roof line or working surface.
  7. Do not overextend the ladder. Maintain the maximum required overlap of sections as follows:
    1. Ladders 32 feet or shorter: three-foot overlap
    2. Ladders 32 to 36 feet: four-foot overlap
    3. Ladders 48 feet or higher: six-foot overlap
  8. When possible, have a second person to hold the ladder while you’re on it.

Extension ladder climbing tips:

  • Securely engage ladder rung locks before climbing. Check that the top and bottom ends of the ladder rails are firmly supported.
  • Face the ladder when climbing up or down and maintain a firm grip. Keep your body centered between the rails.
  • Do not stand higher than three feet from the top of the ladder and never climb above the top support.
  • Do not overload the ladder — it is meant for one person.
  • Keep the ladder close to the work being performed. Avoid pushing or pulling off the side of the ladder.
  • Never drop or apply an impact load to a ladder.
  • Do not “walk” or “shift” the ladder when you’re standing on it.
  • Additional tips: Do not use a ladder in high winds and never use it as a platform, plank, hoist or scaffold

This information, courtesy of Frank Curran (HSE), is also available online as a one-page safety share. Feel free to print this info and use it to help kick off a team discussion at your next meeting with colleagues and/or staff.

All employees are encouraged to submit safety shares for inclusion in the Safety Share Library. Submission details are available on Inside Argonne.

Each month a safety share submitted by an individual will be selected to receive a Spot Award for demonstrated safety leadership. The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).
