All employees required to report for ‘barn-raising’ event

All Argonne employees are expected to report to the laboratory for a “barn-raising” event at the Materials Design Laboratory construction site on Saturday, April 1, 2017.

“In this uncertain budget environment, we felt it would be best to ask employees to pitch in now to help accelerate construction,” said Project Lead Anne Thracks (IS). “That way we’re ahead of the game if we come up a little short toward the end of the project.”

Employees will be tasked with carrying lumber, riveting steel beams and pouring concrete under intense supervision by construction subcontractor Bligh Services.

Employees should wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts and sturdy, closed-toe shoes, and arrive before 6:30 a.m. for the 12-hour shift. Hard hats, gloves and safety glasses will be provided.

In 2008, Argonne employees spent several weekends helping build Argonne’s Nanoscale Dairy Facility. Now home to more than 200 million cows, the facility produces several cups of fresh cream each day for the coffee stand in the Building 213 Cafeteria.
