The latest TWIST tour (Tours of the Women in Science and Technology Program) will explore the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR), which seeks to develop new technologies beyond lithium-ion batteries that store more energy than today’s batteries at a lower the cost.
The tour is scheduled for Thursday, April 20, 2017, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Bldg. 200. Participants should meet in the lobby. Please arrive by 11:15 a.m.
JCESR is establishing a new paradigm for battery research and development that combines groundbreaking discovery science, battery design, research prototyping and manufacturing consultation in a single, highly interactive organization. This tour will show how new battery materials are made in JCESR from computational design to powdered materials and finally into battery electrodes. Then we will show how these new battery electrodes are tested in prototype batteries to determine if they meet the goals of JCESR.
Due to a limit on the number of participants, registration is required. Register online by 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 18.
Safety requirements: please wear closed-toe shoes, and grab your safety glasses. If you do not have safety glasses, no worries — the tour organizers will have safety glasses that you can borrow for the tour.
The TWIST tours are co-organized by Natalia Saraeva (NE) and Ray Patchak (ESQ). These tours are designed to give all Argonne employees an opportunity to learn more about the work being done onsite. About three tours per year are planned, with a different site for each tour.
TWIST grew out of the laboratory facility tours offered to high school girls at the annual Science Careers in Search of Women Conference. Beginning in 2012, WIST members Ja-Quel West (MCS) and Lydia Finney (XSD) recognized the value and popularity of these student tours, and co-founded the tour series so that everyone in the lab could have opportunities to learn about the exciting research being done here.
