The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) national laboratories recently set up displays in the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C. to showcase the work they do across key mission areas. Scientists and engineers discussed their projects with members of Congress, their staff and other attendees.

National Lab Day demonstrated DOE’s important role as a host to world-leading, large-scale scientific facilities and applied scientific research that helps ensure future capabilities in energy, environment, national security and the economy. The event also highlighted DOE’s efforts to attract and retain the next generation to science, engineering and technology.

DOE’s 17 national laboratories form a powerhouse of expertise to address the most significant scientific and technological challenges to our nation’s energy, environmental and national security. The laboratories employ more than 30,000 scientists, engineers and support staff in 19 states, and operate major scientific facilities for the benefit of the nation’s research and development community.
