With the change in season, there is less sunlight in the mornings and evenings when Argonne personnel are arriving at or leaving the lab. Low light levels or sunlight in a driver’s eyes may make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians and bicyclists.
Drivers are reminded to be watchful for pedestrians and bicyclists at all times. Also, please keep an eye out for deer and other wildlife, particularly on Northgate and Westgate Roads which trace paths through our scenic Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve.
Top 5 pedestrian safety tips:
- Walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic, when sidewalks are unavailable. Per the Illinois Rules of the Road: “On public roads,… [joggers/walkers] should face oncoming traffic and remember to look and listen for cars. At night or any time visibility is poor, joggers/walkers should be in well-lit areas and wear reflective clothing.”
- Walk single file. This precautionary guidance applies especially on curving roads where drivers may have only a moment’s notice to avoid hitting you.
- Be visible. Wear bright colors during the day and reflective clothing at night.
- Be predictable. Don’t weave onto road lanes and back. Also, ensure drivers see you and are braking before walking into a crosswalk.
- Put devices down. Your smart phone can wait. Devices down, heads up!
Please continue to be active while enjoying the crisp fall weather and our campus’s changing foliage… while being safe!
