The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society recently honored Hermann Grunder, Argonne Director Emeritus, and former Argonne physicist Sandra Biedron with the Particle Accelerator Science and Technology (PAST) Award.
Grunder, who was director of Argonne from 2000-2005, was honored for his for far-reaching contributions to accelerator science and technology. He is internationally recognized in nuclear and accelerator physics and has published extensively on nuclear physics, high-energy and heavy-ion accelerators, applications of accelerators in medical research and accelerator technology. Before coming to Argonne, he was director of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility and deputy director of general sciences at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in California.
Biedron, from the University of New Mexico, received the award “For broad impact in accelerator science and technology.” Biedron is an Argonne collaborator in the area of controls and a present user of the Argonne’s Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF). She joined Argonne National Laboratory in 1993 contributing to many projects in particle accelerators, lasers, RF, chemical detection, and environmental engineering and held several key positions including leading the defense project office as director and as an associate director of the Argonne Accelerator Institute until 2011. From 2007-2011, Biedron also served as consultant on the successful FERMI@ELettra free-electron laser (FEL) project to which Argonne also contributed in the area of optical diagnostics as a contractor.
The prestigious IEEE PAST Award goes to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of particle accelerator science and technology. Previous PAST awards have gone to prominent accelerator scientists, including now former Argonne employees Keith Symon and Stephen Milton, who were both awarded the prize in 2003.
The 2018 PAST Awards will be presented at the 2018 International Particle Accelerator Conference, which will be held in Vancouver, BC, Canada, April 29 – May 4, 2018.
