Recently, Mary Malik (HSE) noticed a cigarette butt receptacle on campus that had smoke billowing out of it as she was driving in to work. She quickly called for help and mitigated a potentially dangerous situation.
Put out butts
Smokers should extinguish cigarettes and cigars before dropping them into smoking receptacles. Some cans provide instructions on how to extinguish the smoking materials prior to placing them in the containers.
Properly dispose of other trash
Cigarette butt receptacles are not to be used for disposal of paper or trash. Put candy wrappers, receipts and other debris in recycling or trash bins.
Rules and regulations
- LMS-POL-12: No Smoking Policy provides guidelines regarding smoking in and near laboratory buildings.
- The Smoke Free Illinois Act took effect in Illinois on Jan. 1, 2008. It bans smoking inside public places, workplaces and in vehicles used by the general public or owned by the government, unless exempted. See section 35 of the act.
