Mike Norman has been appointed to Interim Associate Laboratory Director for the Physical Sciences and Engineering Directorate and John Mitchell has been appointed Interim Director for the Materials Science Division (MSD). Mitchell will continue to lead the Materials and Chemistry strategic initiative.

Both Norman and Mitchell are Argonne Distinguished Fellows. Their appointments are effective Feb. 1, 2018.

Norman joined Argonne in 1983 as a postdoctoral appointee in condensed matter theory and served in many roles of increasing responsibility before becoming MSD director in 2011. He is a fellow of the University of Chicago’s Institute for Molecular Engineering, a fellow of the American Physical Society, a principal investigator of the Center for Emergent Superconductivity, and he is on the editorial board for Physical Review X.

Mitchell joined Argonne in 1996 and has served as MSD associate director since 2009. His current research emphasizes strategic synthesis, crystal growth, and structural studies of correlated electron transition metal oxides and chalcogenides using neutron and X-ray scattering. Last October, Argonne named John as the director of the Materials and Chemistry initiative, which aims to yield unprecedented abilities to manipulate matter for uses from advanced batteries and catalysts to quantum materials and clean water systems.
