The first tutorial in the Quantum Computing Tutorial Series will be held Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018, at noon at the University of Chicago, Regenstein Library, Techbar, or participants can attend online via BlueJeans. Fred Chong, Seymour Goodman Professor at the University of Chicago, will be the speaker.

Please register with India Gordon (CLS). A link to a Box folder containing slide decks, presentation materials and video recordings will be distributed to all registrants after the session.

Abstract

Quantum computing sits poised at the verge of a revolution. Quantum machines may soon be capable of performing calculations in chemistry, physics, and other fields that are extremely difficult or even impossible for today’s computers. Yet near-term machines will face substantial challenges in terms of reliability and scale, while near-term applications are likely to be heuristic algorithms which can tolerate noisy computation.

To dive into this surging field, CELS is hosting a series of monthly one-hour tutorials open to all Argonne National Laboratory and University of Chicago staff and students, called the Quantum Computing Tutorial Series. These tutorials will be available both in-person and online, and will be recorded for follow-up viewing. Registrants are encouraged to participate in this progressive series and the experience will culminate in an in-person two-day Quantum Computing Workshop hosted in spring 2018.

The first tutorial in the Quantum Computing Tutorial Series will give an overview of the state-of-the-art in quantum applications, software, and hardware. In particular, the vertical integration of applications, software, and hardware is needed to increase the efficiency of quantum computation. Factors of 100 to 1000 improvement are possible, effectively bringing quantum computing out of the laboratory and into practical use 10-20 years sooner than through technology advances alone.
