On Jan. 24, 2018, Timothy Donnelly (BIS) received a Gold Spot Award for providing outstanding care for fellow employees.
On a cold day after a heavy snowfall, the Building 240 parking lot and sidewalks were covered with a layer of ice. This presented hazardous conditions to drivers and employees walking to the building. Donnelly had arrived early that morning and took it upon himself to help reduce the dangerous walking conditions. He began by making multiple trips with the self-serve salt bucket to popular walking areas around the building. Then, he created a salted pathway leading to the safest route to the building. Finally, he directed employees to the path he created and even served as a brace for an employee who appeared especially at risk of slipping.
Donnelly’s considerate actions exemplify what it means to take responsibility for safety at the lab.
Spot Awards give employees “on-the-spot” recognition for positive safety or quality assurance initiative. The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).
If you see an employee exhibiting behavior that warrants positive recognition (e.g., safe behavior or process improvements), you can nominate that individual for a Spot Award by submitting xink form Spot Award (ANL-758).
The form will be routed to the individual’s supervisor and division for approval. Observers may award employees from their own division or from other divisions. The cost of the award is charged to the recipient’s division.
Additional information about the Spot Award program is available on Inside Argonne.
