In June 2018, Patricia Weikersheimer (BIS) received a Gold Spot Award for her actions in response to a fallen tree branch.
One afternoon, Weikersheimer was in her office when she heard a sound from outside that caught her attention. Looking out her office window in Building 202, she could see that a large oak tree branch had fallen adjacent to the walkway leading to the building’s main entrance.
Thankful that no one was in the area, she realized that there was a risk of additional debris that could fall at any moment. She called 911 and the area was cordoned off within fifteen minutes.
Thanks to Weikersheimer’s quick actions, the hazard was mitigated and a safe walking environment was re-established.
Spot Awards give employees “on-the-spot” recognition for positive safety or quality assurance initiative. The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).
If you see an employee exhibiting behavior that warrants positive recognition (e.g., safe behavior or process improvements), you can nominate that individual for a Spot Award by submitting xink form Spot Award (ANL-758).
The form will be routed to the individual’s supervisor and division for approval. Observers may award employees from their own division or from other divisions. The cost of the award is charged to the recipient’s division.
Additional information about the Spot Award program is available on Inside Argonne.
