Computer Science Education Week is Dec. 3-9, 2018, and each year Argonne runs an initiative to help schools participate in “Hour of Code” activities and provide schools with computer scientist role models.
Argonne computer scientists are needed to volunteer for Hour of Code — a worldwide movement designed to demystify code, to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science.
Here is how the program works:
- You register and select your preferences
- Schools register and select their preferences
- We match you with schools based on preferences to the best of our ability
- You prepare a short 10- to 15-minute presentation about your work (we will provide a template for this during a one-hour training)
- On the day or days you have selected and agreed upon with the teacher, you travel to the school and give short presentation to a class or multiple classes (we ask that you stay at the school for a minimum of two hours, but you are welcome to stay up to the entire day)
- After the presentation, the teacher will lead the class in coding activities as you walk around the room, talking to the students and helping them when they get stuck.

Last year, more than 50 computer scientists from Argonne, Fermilab and University of Chicago went out to more than 50 schools. Let’s try and beat that number this year! If interested, please fill out this Google form: Volunteer Registration
