As 2018 comes to a close, I would like to thank you for your commitment, dedication and contributions to Argonne. We’ve had a great year, achieving record funding, hitting key project milestones with the APS upgrade, Aurora and JCESR, launching core values and shaping our culture, and driving a vision for operational excellence. We have improved how we work, and I thank you for your focus on working safely.  You’ll find a summary of these accomplishments in our FY18 year-end highlights reel.

I see an equally bright outlook for 2019. We will continue our quest for more scientific and engineering breakthroughs, collaborating with our research partners and leveraging our world-class facilities. You can expect Argonne to pursue opportunities in quantum information science, artificial intelligence, grid modernization, energy-water systems and more. Argonne played a significant role in a new U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Basic Research Needs report on microelectronics, and we anticipate another opportunity to contribute to a report focused on basic research needs in manufacturing. In these areas, Argonne is collaborating across internal boundaries and with external partners to take full advantage of the lab’s capabilities to increase our impact.

Usually at this time, DOE releases our fiscal year Performance Evaluation Measurement Plan results. This year, DOE will share our “report card” on Dec. 20, and I look forward to providing context and our scores when we return in January.

Please enjoy the time away with family and friends to rest and recharge for the new year. I thank each of you for your efforts to accelerate the science and technology that drives U.S. prosperity and security. It is a privilege to lead this laboratory, and I wish you happy holidays.
