“Fuel Cell – Heat Engine Hybrids,” by Mechanical Engineer Sreenath Gupta (ES)

Abstract

A new class of energy systems — essentially hybrids of reciprocating engines, gas turbines and fuel cells — offer efficiencies surpassing 60 percent. However, issues such as cost, maintenance and start ability remain a concern. In this project, we performed a literature survey of the developmental efforts for such hybrid systems. Subsequently, based on a novel gas separation technology we prepared the preliminary design for a natural gas fueled reciprocating engine — SOFC hybrid.

Biography

Sreenath Gupta’s expertise spans across laser diagnostics, combustion and reciprocating engines. Over the past 15 years he established the Distributed Energy Research Center (DERC) which promotes distributed power generation and combined heat and power. He concentrated his efforts in developing technologies for improving the performance of natural gas reciprocating engines. Notable among his contributions is the development of a laser ignition system that leads to significant fuel savings.

Pavan Balaji

“Lightweight Computing for Large Supercomputing Systems,” by Computer Scientist Pavan Balaji (MCS)

Abstract

BOLT deals with utilizing the processing systems on modern supercomputing systems efficiently. It relies on over-decomposition of the problem to minimize computational idleness and to maximize productive usage of large supercomputers. With BOLT we have been able to substantially improve the processing of many critical science problems, some of which I will showcase in this talk.

Biography

Pavan Balaji holds appointments as a computer scientist and group lead at Argonne National Laboratory, where he leads the Programming Models and Runtime Systems group. His research interests include parallel programming models and runtime systems for communication and I/O on extreme-scale supercomputing systems, modern system architecture, cloud computing systems, data-intensive computing and big-data sciences.
