Greg Krumdick
Gregory Krumdick has been appointed director of the Applied Materials division (AMD), effective March 1, 2019.
Krumdick has served as interim director of the AMD division since its formation in spring 2018. In his new role, Krumdick will lead versatile teams that bridge materials research from the basic to applied through commercialization.
In his 26-year career in Argonne’s Applied Materials and Energy Systems divisions, Krumdick has identified and developed advanced materials that are often hard to synthesize and manufacture at scale. The Materials Engineering Research Facility (MERF), dedicated to the synthesis and scale-up of advanced materials, was established based on his vision and under his leadership. The MERF has been instrumental in connecting Argonne materials’ research to industry applications in multiple domains including batteries, catalysts and water.
Krumdick is currently co-leading the Manufacturing Science and Engineering Initiative with his focus on expanding the MERF. This expansion aims to broaden the facility’s process capabilities and to leverage improved analytics coupled with machine learning and artificial intelligence to improve scientific understanding of complex manufacturing process technologies and accelerate the development of game-changing energy materials. Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy launched the first lithium-ion battery recycling center, called the ReCell Center, with a dedicated set of capabilities located within the MERF. The ReCell Center seeks to develop and demonstrate the technologies needed to enable sustainable and economically viable battery recycling in collaboration with other national labs, academia and industry.
Krumdick received his M.S. in bioengineering, focused on process control systems, from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and his B.S in biology and chemistry from Lewis University.
