Several Argonne postdoctoral appointees will receive the inaugural Postdoctoral Performance Award to honor them for their exceptional research performance.
The awards were established to recognize the significant contributions postdoctoral appointees make to Argonne’s mission. The three categories for the awards — basic research, engineering research and applied research — seek to acknowledge the diverse expertise among Argonne’s postdoctoral community.
The 2016 Postdoctoral Performance Award in the Basic Research category will be given to SaeHwan Chun (MSD) for his work in condensed matter physics in the Emerging Materials Group in the Materials Science Division (MSD). Matthias Benjamin Jungfleisch (MSD) and Joseph Grange (HEP) will receive honorable mentions. Jungfleisch is a postdoctoral appointee in the Magnetic Films Group in MSD. Grange is a postdoctoral appointee in the Precision Muon Group in the High Energy Physics Division (HEP).
The 2016 Postdoctoral Performance Award in Applied Research will be shared by Diana Berman (NST) and Junjian Qi (ES). Berman was nominated for her work in the area of the tribology of two-dimensional materials in the Nanofabrication and Devices Group in the Nanoscience and Technology Division (NST). Qi was nominated for his work in power system control in the Grid Modeling Group in the Energy Systems Division (ES). Receiving honorable mentions are Giovanni Ramirez (ES) and Xuan Zhang (NE). Ramirez is a postdoctoral appointee with the Surfaces and Lubrication Interaction, Discovery and Engineering (SLIDE) Group in ES. Zhang is a postdoctoral appointee with the Corrosion and Mechanics of Materials Section in the Nuclear Engineering Division (NE).
The 2016 Postdoctoral Performance Award in the Engineering Research category will be given to Xiaonan Lu (ES) for his work on microgrids, active distribution systems and advanced real-time hardware-in-the-loop testing in the Grid Modeling Group in ES. Chihpin (Andrew) Chuang (XSD) will receive honorable mention. Chuang is a postdoctoral appointee in the Materials Physics and Engineering Group in the APS X-Ray Science Division (XSD).
The awards were established by the Leadership Institute and are sponsored by Deputy Director for Programs, Al Sattelberger, Deputy Director for Science Matt Tirrell and Deputy Director for Operations Paul Kearns.
Awardees will be recognized at a reception planned for Monday, Dec. 5, 2016, at 4 p.m. in the 213 Bistro Open Area. Welcome remarks will begin at 4:15, followed by the awards presentation. Light refreshments will be served. All employees are welcome to attend.
