Argonne’s ninth annual Postdoctoral Research and Career Symposium was held this fall to showcase the scientific research of postdoctoral scientists and engineers and graduate students and to offer them networking opportunities to help further their careers. The symposium also connects industry and government recruiters with the nation’s top scientific and engineering talent. Postdocs and graduate students from Argonne, Fermilab and Chicago-area universities participate in the event. “The Postdoctoral Society of Argonne (PSA) did a great job organizing this year’s symposium,” said Tina Henne, Postdoctoral Programs Lead. “They vetted speakers and panelists and put together a program that provides a nice snapshot of a diversity of careers. This event continues to evolve as the needs and interests of postdocs change. I am eager to see what the organizing committee has in store for 2017.” This year’s keynote address, “NiTi Alloys for Tribological Applications: The Effects of Serendipity on R&D,” was given by Christopher DellaCorte, NASA, Glenn Research Center. The full-day event also featured panel discussions on both academic and non-academic careers, as well as a networking lunch where company exhibitors and representatives from diverse career paths had the chance to talk with postdocs in small groups. Poster presentations at the symposium gave participants an opportunity to practice the important skill of speaking with people outside their field — an essential skill for scientists who need to be able to successfully communicate the value of their research with potential funders and other key stakeholders. Five poster award winners were selected this year:
Winners received a certificate and monetary award. Poster presentations were judged for overall poster appearance and quality, topic organization, clarity and significance of illustrations and knowledge of topic. More than a dozen exhibiting companies had booths at the event where participants could learn how their expertise may match the needs of industry partners. This year’s symposium planning committee members were: Antia S. Botana (MSD), Dan Goldberg (ES), Jonnathan Medina-Ramos (CSE), Kiran Sasikumar (NST), Marta Sitek (NE), Nityanand Sinha (NE), Noah Van Dam (ES), Lee Solomon (NST), Giovanni Ramirez (ES), Symposium Chair and Tina Henne (LI). “I was thrilled to be a part of the symposium this year,” said Lee Solomon, president of the PSA. “This was an outstanding event that helped postdocs make scientific and professional connections that we hope they will carry with them their entire careers. Our annual symposium provides a showcase for postdocs to show off their research to a new audience while at the same time learn more about getting a job.
