Gopal Shenoy and Mildred Dresselhaus
Mildred S. Dresselhaus, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) whose research helped unlock the mysteries of carbon, died Monday at age 86. She was also nationally known for her work to develop wider opportunities for women in science and engineering.
In this 2000 photo, Gopal Shenoy, scientific director of Argonne’s Advanced Photon Source, shows the inner workings of the facility to Dresselhaus on her first full day as director of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science. Dresselhaus visited Argonne for tours and an onsite review. She was also a member of Argonne’s Board of Governors in the 1980s.
