Mildred S. Dresselhaus, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) whose research helped unlock the mysteries of carbon, died Monday at age 86. She was also nationally known for her work to develop wider opportunities for women in science and engineering.

Dresselhaus visited Argonne for tours and an onsite review. She was also a member of Argonne’s Board of Governors in the 1980s.
