QuickBase, the company that runs Freecycle@Work, will be terminating its Freecycle program on March 31, 2017. This means that Argonne’s Freecycle account will no longer be available.
Freecycle had been used by laboratory employees to exchange both laboratory and personal property.
What now?
Going forward, laboratory-owned property can continue to be exchanged through the Argonne Property Excess System (APES). Instead of throwing out reusable items or purchasing new ones, you can offer or request surplus equipment from other laboratory organizations. Reusable items include:
- Electronic equipment
- Laboratory equipment
- Lamps
- Lead shielding
- Furniture
- Magnifiers
- Microscopes
- Office supplies
- Ovens
- Refrigerators
- Shelving
- Storage cabinets
Items that cannot be transferred through APES:
- Broken or unusable items
- Chemicals
- Hazardous materials or waste
- Radioactive materials or waste
- Hoist and rigging equipment without prior Subject Matter Expert (SME) inspection
- Pressure vessels without prior SME inspection
Additional information about APES is available on Inside Argonne.
Personal property cannot be exchanged through APES. However, a variety of property exchange websites are publicly available online.
