Abstract

When art experts study the works of master painters, they scrutinize everything from composition and content to the brushstrokes and materials the artist used to convey a message about the subject, time and society in which the work was created. But when scientists peered into a painting by Pablo Picasso, their examination went many steps further — all the way down to the nanoscale. What did they find?

Join us as Argonne physicist Volker Rose explains how the Advanced Photon Source, one of the brightest light sources in the world, revealed the real substance of some of Picasso’s paintings and paints.

About the Presenter

Volker Rose is a physicist in Argonne’s X-Ray Science Division.
